The Wall Street Journal has written a piece featuring former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’s article entitled Drones: The Power to Kill, which has recently been published in Volume 82:1 of The George Washington Law Review. In his article, Gonzales calls for more limits on drone strikes against U.S. citizens overseas. Gonzales argues forcefully that Congress and the President should implement various measures to ensure that the procedures the Obama Administration uses to place American citizens on the list of targets for drone strikes comply with constitutional guarantees of due process.
During his tenure as White House Counsel and Attorney General under President George W. Bush, Gonzales was instrumental in shaping the United States’ counterterrorism policies in the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Gonzales’s impressive pedigree in this area enables him to offer readers a unique and insightful perspective on a controversial issue that continues to be at the forefront of the legal community.

The WSJ also recognizes Professor Stephen Vladeck of American University Washington College of Law, who has written a response piece to Gonzales’s article. Although Vladeck agrees with Gonzales’s broader push for more accountability and oversight of U.S. targeted killings overseas, he offers his own views about why that is necessary and how it can best be achieved. Vladeck’s response, Targeted Killing and Judicial Review, has been published in Arguendo, The George Washington Law Review‘s online companion publication.
Vladeck is also a co-editor of JustSecurity.org, a civil liberties and national security blog. His post on Gonzales’s article and his response to it can be found by clicking here.
